Rainbow Hunt: Sketching Where the Light Lands
If you have a suncatcher, a glass of water on a sunny sill or anything shiny near a window, there may be little rainbows in your home right now. This creative interruption is about finding them.
what you need
A sunny window and something that makes rainbows
Paper and a pen, or colored pencils if you have them
how to do it
Go looking for today’s rainbows. Check the walls, the floor, the ceiling, the couch, the cat.
Pick one and sketch its shape. A smudge, a stripe, a little dot. It doesn’t need to look like anything.
If you have colored pencils, add the colors you see in the order you see them.
Write the time and the spot next to your sketch.
they move
That’s the fun part. The sun shifts through the day and through the seasons, so tomorrow the rainbows will land somewhere else. Do this a few times and you start to learn how light moves through your home.
no suncatcher? no problem
A glass of water or an old CD can throw a little rainbow too. If it’s cloudy, sketch the spot where you think a rainbow would land if the sun came out, then check back on a sunny day.
If you’d like a rainbow maker of your own, my handmade AB crystal suncatchers add extra purples and blues on top of the regular prism colors.
Creative interruptions like this one are woven all through Tiny Invitations of Wonder, my prompt journal coming early 2027. You can find more on the creative interruptions page.
