Color Today: A One-Square Daily Check-In

This creative interruption is less about drawing and more about checking in. One small square, one color, a few seconds. After a week, you have a little map of how your days felt.

what you need

  • Paper or a notebook page

  • Colored pencils, markers, crayons or whatever you have around

how to do it

  1. Draw a small square. Thumbnail-sized is plenty.

  2. Look at your colors and pick the one that matches how today feels. Go with your first pick.

  3. Fill the square in. Press hard, press soft, scribble. All of it counts.

  4. Write the date underneath.

Tomorrow, draw a new square right next to it and do it again.

there are no right colors

Gray doesn’t have to mean sad and yellow doesn’t have to mean happy. Maybe today feels like the green of a wet lawn. Maybe it feels like the brown paper bag your lunch came in. Whatever color you reach for is the right one.

what to do with your squares

Nothing, if you want. Or look back at the end of the week and see what you notice. A run of blues? A surprise orange on Thursday? You don’t have to analyze it. Just look.

ways to play with it

  • Split the square in half for morning and evening.

  • Add one word next to each square.

  • Keep a full month on one page and look at it all together.
